The United Arab Emirates has announced a recall of 1,983 Toyota Highlander vehicles after identifying a potential defect in the second-row seat mechanisms. The issue could prevent seatbacks from locking securely, increasing the risk of passenger injuries in the event of a collision. The recall was announced by Al-Futtaim Motors in coordination with the UAE's consumer protection authorities.

Which Toyota Highlander Models Are Affected?

The recall covers Toyota Highlander VXR and GXR models manufactured in the United States between 2021 and 2023. The affected vehicles are being recalled because their second-row seat reclining mechanisms may not engage properly when the seatback is adjusted.

The defect could leave a seatback insufficiently secured, potentially reducing passenger protection during an accident, particularly in high-speed collisions.

What Caused the Safety Defect?

According to the recall notice, a modification to the reclining mechanism's design may have created an imbalance between the locking and return spring forces. As a result, the mechanism's locking teeth may not engage fully, preventing the seatback from securing properly.

The issue highlights the importance of ensuring that vehicle seating systems function correctly, as properly locked seatbacks play an important role in protecting passengers during a collision.

Free Repairs for Affected Vehicles

Al-Futtaim Motors will contact owners of affected vehicles to arrange the necessary repairs. The corrective action involves replacing the return springs in the second-row seat reclining mechanisms, and all repairs will be provided free of charge.

Owners of Toyota Highlander vehicles from the specified model years should respond to recall notifications and contact an authorised Toyota service centre to confirm whether their vehicle is affected. The campaign forms part of the UAE's ongoing efforts to address vehicle safety concerns and protect consumers.
