Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar – and global clean power leader RWE have received planning permission for the two Dogger Bank South (DBS) offshore wind farms, DBS West and DBS East. The UK Energy Secretary’s legal authority, represented by Lord Whitehead, approved the Development Consent Order (DCO) for the projects.
The combined installed capacity of the two farms will reach 3 gigawatts (GW), sufficient to supply electricity to approximately 3 million UK homes each year. Located over 100 kilometers off England’s northeast coast, the projects are expected to generate significant economic opportunities for local businesses and communities in Yorkshire, the Humber, and the wider UK.
Earlier this year, the projects successfully secured Contracts for Difference (CfD) through the UK Government’s Allocation Round 7 (AR7). The DCO application, initially submitted in June 2024, involved more than 1,000 documents reviewed by the Planning Inspectorate and ten online examination hearings.
RWE and Masdar plan to complete detailed final design work and procurement decisions, targeting a final investment decision (FID) in 2027. The offshore wind projects are being developed as a joint venture, with RWE holding a 51% stake and Masdar 49%.
These developments mark a major step forward in the UK’s renewable energy ambitions and underline the growing role of offshore wind in the country’s transition to sustainable power.
