The meeting focused on strengthening the UAE’s relationship with leading global financial institutions, expanding cross-border financial services and supporting Dubai’s ambition to become one of the world’s leading financial centres.
UAE Strengthens Partnership with Global Banking Institutions
During the meeting, Sheikh Maktoum reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to building stronger connections with international financial institutions. He highlighted the country’s advanced regulatory framework, digital capabilities and world-class infrastructure as important advantages for financial organisations seeking to expand their international operations.
Standard Chartered has maintained a presence in the UAE since 1958, making it one of the long-established international banking institutions in the country. The discussions also covered the bank’s regional and global outlook, including opportunities in investment, trade and wealth management.
Dubai Targets Global Financial Centre Status
A key topic was Dubai’s ambition under the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 to become one of the world’s top four financial centres by 2033.
The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) remains central to this strategy, supporting the growth of financial services, fintech businesses and international investment. According to information shared during the meeting, the number of companies specialising in artificial intelligence, financial technology and innovation reached 1,933 by July 2026, representing annual growth of 39%.
The expansion reflects Dubai’s efforts to attract businesses working across traditional banking, digital finance and emerging technologies.
Standard Chartered Looks to Deepen UAE Cooperation
Bill Winters welcomed Dubai’s growing position as an international financial hub and expressed the bank’s interest in strengthening its longstanding relationship with the UAE.
Standard Chartered operates across 55 markets, with services covering international trade, investment and wealth management. Its global network gives it a significant role in connecting businesses and financial markets across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.
The meeting reflects the UAE’s broader efforts to strengthen its financial sector through international partnerships, technological innovation and regulatory development. Continued cooperation with major banking institutions could support Dubai’s long-term goal of becoming a leading destination for global financial activity.
