Dubai’s New Bus Pooling Service: A Game-Changer for Commuters

Dubai – Dubai's new bus pooling service, launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in December 2024, has quickly gained popularity among residents. Within the first 10 days, more than 500 people used the service, and it continues to expand as more commuters discover its benefits.

A Convenient and Affordable Alternative

The new service has proven to be a hit, especially for those tired of the traditional RTA bus system. Khaleej Times tried the service firsthand, speaking with frequent users who praised its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Tarek, a regular commuter from Karama, shared his experience: “It’s better than the RTA bus because there’s no waiting for the next one if you miss it. Plus, there are fewer stops, so the trip to my office in Business Bay is just 15 to 20 minutes.”

The bus pooling service allows commuters to share rides in minibuses booked through smart apps. Unlike traditional public transport, the minibuses come directly to the passenger’s location, bypassing the need to wait at a bus stop.

Affordable and Efficient

The service is a cheaper alternative to taxis, with fares running 20 to 30 percent lower than e-hail taxis. A ride from Garhoud to DIFC, booked via the Citylink Shuttle app, cost Dh32 and took about 20 minutes, while a traditional bus ride would have taken at least 56 minutes, including waiting times. For comparison, a taxi would have cost approximately Dh43.

How It Works

Operated by three companies—Citylink Shuttle, DrivenBus, and Fluxx Daily—the service is available through their respective apps. Passengers can choose the provider based on their location. With 60 minibuses currently in operation, the service accommodates 10-12 people per vehicle, with no fixed routes or requirements for the bus to be full before departure.

Growing Popularity

The initiative, which initially connected Deira to central business hubs such as Business Bay and Dubai Mall, has expanded to additional areas. The service continues to grow, with RTA officials noting that more buses will be added to meet demand.

User Feedback

Passengers like Mohammed, who uses the service from Al Nahda to Business Bay, highlighted the comfort of the buses, especially the spacious legroom and the convenience of having the bus pick them up at their doorstep.

The service is proving to be a game-changer in Dubai’s transport system, offering an affordable, efficient, and comfortable option for commuters. With expansion plans underway, it’s expected that more areas in the city will soon benefit from this service.
