Dubai, UAE – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged all parties involved in the Sudan conflict to observe a humanitarian ceasefire during Ramadan, emphasizing the need to alleviate suffering amid one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

The appeal was made during the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan, held in Ethiopia, where regional and international leaders gathered to address the ongoing conflict.

UAE Appeals for Peace During Sacred Month

In a statement shared with Khaleej TimesReem Al Hashimy, UAE’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, called for an end to hostilities as the holy month approaches.

“As we prepare to enter Ramadan, a time of mercy and reflection, we urge all parties in Sudan to honor this sacred period with a humanitarian ceasefire,” Al Hashimy said.

She underscored the devastating impact of the war, which has persisted for nearly two years, causing mass displacement, severe food shortages, and the collapse of essential services.

“We have witnessed one of the world’s gravest humanitarian calamities unfold in Sudan. This war has endured far too long, claiming innocent lives and inflicting immense suffering on millions,” she added.

Growing International Support for Ceasefire

The UAE’s call for a Ramadan truce has been supported by France, Canada, the United States, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, the Sudanese army has rejected the proposal, further complicating efforts to establish a pause in fighting.

Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE’s Minister of State, also reinforced the urgency of the ceasefire, appealing to all factions in Sudan to respect the sanctity of Ramadan.

“In just two weeks, the Muslim world will embrace the Blessed Holy Month of Ramadan. We call on all parties in Sudan to recognize the significance of this sacred time and agree to a humanitarian pause,” he stated.

Sheikh Shakhboot stressed that such a pause would allow critical aid efforts to reach vulnerable communities, particularly women and children, who have been disproportionately affected by the crisis.

“No entity has the right to obstruct life-saving humanitarian assistance. All parties must adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law,” he emphasized.

UAE Pledges $200 Million in Aid for Sudan

In addition to diplomatic efforts, the UAE has announced a new humanitarian aid package worth $200 million to support Sudanese civilians in need.

“Today, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the people of Sudan by pledging an additional $200 million in humanitarian funding,” Sheikh Shakhboot declared.

He noted that the UAE has historically stood by Sudan, providing $3.5 billion in assistance over the past decade to support healthcare, food security, and infrastructure.

“The Sudanese people deserve to live in safety and dignity. They have the right to food, medical care, clean water, and shelter—fundamental human rights that must be upheld,” he added.

Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan Worsens

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to the displacement of millions, with food shortages, medical supply disruptions, and growing security concerns exacerbating the crisis. Aid agencies have repeatedly called for unhindered access to reach those in need.

With the UAE’s renewed commitment to diplomatic engagement and humanitarian relief, global leaders hope for progress toward a sustainable peace in the region.
