Dubai: The Salik dynamic toll pricing system has come into effect from today (January 31, 2025), bringing a shift in how motorists navigate Dubai’s roads. While toll fees have increased during peak hours, those traveling between 1 AM and 6 AM can now enjoy free passage through Salik gates, leading to significant savings for early commuters and night-time drivers.

Early Commuters See Cost and Time Savings

Abu Aiman, a Sharjah resident, finds the toll-free hours beneficial for his daily commute to Abu Dhabi.

"I leave home at 5:30 AM to reach work by 8 AM. Before, I avoided Salik gates by taking Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road. Now, with Salik being free until 6 AM, I can take Ittihad Road and Sheikh Zayed Road, which are faster and more direct," he said.

He noted that the shorter route would also help reduce fuel consumption, making his daily travel more efficient.

Late-Night Drivers Welcome Cost-Free Journeys

For Adnan Chaudhry, who has lived in Dubai for 15 years, the change allows him to enjoy the city’s nightlife without incurring toll fees.

"I often drive late at night when roads are quieter. The toll-free window from 1 AM to 6 AM is perfect for someone like me who enjoys long drives. Before, I used to pay around Dh48 for a weekend round trip to Dubai Marina. Now, I can drive without worrying about toll charges," he said.

Residents Adjust Travel Plans to Maximize Savings

Jitendra Singh, an IT professional based in Sharjah, frequently visits Al Qudra Lake and Love Lake with his family on weekends.

"We often return home late at night. Earlier, we paid Salik tolls on the way back, but now we can take the same direct route without any cost if we travel after 1 AM," he shared.

Mashal Hussain, a marketing professional, finds the toll-free period a practical improvement for daily commuters.

"Many of us work late hours or have social plans that extend into the night. Knowing that Salik is free at night means I don’t have to worry about checking my balance before heading out," she said.

Key Aspects of the New Salik System

  • Toll Fees Adjusted for Peak Hours: Higher charges apply during busy periods.
  • Free Travel Between 1 AM and 6 AM: Motorists can avoid toll charges by traveling during these hours.
  • Traffic Flow Optimization: Encourages better road usage by reducing congestion in peak hours.

Motorists are restructuring their travel habits to take advantage of Salik's off-peak benefits, demonstrating how policy changes can influence commuter behavior while providing financial relief.
