The United Arab Emirates is strengthening its position as one of the world's leading digital asset markets, with institutional investors increasingly driving cryptocurrency adoption, according to the chief executive of Bitcoin Suisse.

Speaking in an interview, Bitcoin Suisse Co-founder and CEO Andrej Majcen said the company's decision to establish its Middle East headquarters in Abu Dhabi reflects confidence in the UAE's regulatory environment and long-term strategy for digital finance.

The expansion follows the company's receipt of Financial Services Permission from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) at Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), allowing its regional subsidiary to provide regulated virtual asset services to professional investors.

"We wanted our first Middle East presence to be in a market that shares our long-term vision for digital finance," Majcen said, adding that the UAE has demonstrated strong regulatory support, institutional stability and a commitment to financial innovation.

According to blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, the UAE received more than $56 billion in cryptocurrency value between mid-2024 and mid-2025, with institutional transactions accounting for a significant share of the activity.

Majcen said the market has evolved considerably in recent years, shifting from retail-driven participation toward institutional adoption.

"A few years ago, demand was largely driven by retail investors. Today, we are increasingly engaging with family offices, banks, asset managers and institutional investors that view digital assets as part of long-term portfolio strategies," he said.

He noted that institutional investors now expect digital asset service providers to meet the same standards of governance, security and regulatory compliance as traditional financial institutions.

The company currently safeguards approximately $3.7 billion in digital assets and is the world's fourth-largest staking operator, underscoring its growing presence in the global digital asset industry.

Looking ahead, Majcen said technologies including tokenization, stablecoins and institutional digital asset custody are expected to play a significant role in transforming financial services over the coming years.

He added that blockchain technology itself will increasingly operate in the background, enabling faster and more efficient financial services without being directly visible to end users.

For investors considering exposure to digital assets, Majcen recommended focusing on long-term financial objectives, maintaining diversified portfolios and choosing regulated service providers with strong governance and transparent operating standards.

Bitcoin Suisse said its long-term objective in the Middle East extends beyond business expansion, with the company aiming to support the region's growing digital asset ecosystem while serving institutional and professional investors.

The latest developments reinforce the UAE's ambition to position itself as a global hub for digital finance, supported by progressive regulation, expanding institutional participation and continued investment in financial innovation.
