Dubai: Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the UAE will soon have a faster and simpler way to send money home and pay bills in the Philippines. Fintech firm Aqwire has become the first Philippine company to enable Google Pay and Apple Pay for cross-border transactions.
The move allows Filipinos abroad to use their mobile wallets to pay for real estate, tuition, utilities, or other bills directly through Aqwire’s platform, without relying on remittance centers or costly bank transfers.
Aqwire said the new system uses tokenization, which replaces sensitive card details with encrypted digital tokens, reducing fraud risks and speeding up payments. The platform supports multiple currencies and settles payments in Philippine pesos.
The integration follows regulatory changes that let global wallet services operate in the Philippines without additional central bank registration. Aqwire is also working with developers like Filinvest Land, marking the country’s first SEPA-based real estate payment.
What It Means for OFWs
For over 700,000 Filipinos in the UAE, the service could ease the process of supporting families or paying investments back home. Users can pay Philippine companies directly from their smartphones if their UAE-issued cards are compatible with Google Pay or Apple Pay.
The change may lower transaction costs, reduce delays, and provide stronger payment security. For those managing multiple payments monthly, such as tuition, housing, or utility bills, it could eliminate the need for separate remittance steps.
Challenges Ahead
Analysts note that adoption will depend on bank support, exchange rates, and regulatory oversight between the Philippines and the UAE.
Aqwire’s success will also rely on Philippine businesses and institutions accepting payments through its system.
Still, the company’s expansion represents a significant step toward digital cross-border payments and could reshape how OFWs handle their financial obligations.
If widely adopted, sending money home may soon be as simple as a tap on a phone screen.
