Green Bay, Wisconsin – Tech billionaire Elon Musk sparked fresh political and legal debate over the weekend after handing out $1 million cheques to voters at a rally in Wisconsin, just days before the state’s pivotal Supreme Court election. The high-stakes judicial race has now become the most expensive in U.S. history, with national implications stretching into future battles over voting rights, redistricting, and abortion.

Musk made the surprise giveaway during an America PAC town hall at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay on Sunday, March 30, presenting two oversized $1 million cheques to individuals who had signed a petition opposing what he called "activist judges."

Legal Battle Over Election Interference

The event drew swift legal action from Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, a Democrat, who accused Musk of violating state election laws that prohibit offering gifts in exchange for votes. Kaul filed a lawsuit in an attempt to block the giveaway, claiming it was a direct attempt to influence voter behavior.

However, two lower courts ruled in Musk's favor, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court declined to intervene, allowing the giveaway to proceed. Musk’s legal team argued that the payments were not intended to sway votes for any candidate, but rather to "generate grassroots opposition" to judicial activism — a form of protected political speech under the First Amendment.

“We just want judges to be judges,” Musk said at the rally, emphasizing his stance against politicized courts.

A Pivotal Election with National Implications

The Wisconsin Supreme Court race features conservative Judge Brad Schimel of Waukesha County, backed by Musk and former President Donald Trump, against liberal Judge Susan Crawford of Dane County. The outcome of Tuesday’s election could flip the ideological balance of the court, which currently leans liberal.

Control of the court is seen as crucial ahead of several politically sensitive cases, including those on abortion accesscongressional redistricting, and voting laws—issues that could shape the 2026 midterm elections and beyond.

Campaign Financing and Political Distance

Musk has also reportedly donated $14 million to Judge Schimel’s campaign, contributing to what has become the most expensive judicial race in American history, with total campaign and PAC spending reaching $81 million.

Despite Musk’s high-profile endorsement and financial backing, Schimel appeared to distance himself from the billionaire's actions, telling the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel last week:

“I have no idea what he’s doing. I have no idea what this rally is.”

Not Musk’s First Political Giveaway

This isn't the first time Musk has tied financial giveaways to political causes. Last year, he launched a similar initiative offering $1 million daily cash prizes to voters in Wisconsin and six other battleground states who signed petitions in support of First and Second Amendment rights.

In that case, a judge in Pennsylvania ruled in Musk’s favor, stating that prosecutors failed to prove the act constituted an illegal lottery or vote-buying scheme.

Looking Ahead

As Wisconsin voters head to the polls, the intersection of money, influence, and judicial power is once again under the national spotlight. Musk’s involvement, while legally cleared, has amplified the stakes and stirred ongoing debate about the ethical boundaries of political engagement in modern American democracy.
