Egypt and the United Arab Emirates are exploring deeper cooperation in oil and gas drilling as Cairo moves ahead with plans to increase domestic production through a broader programme of onshore and offshore exploration.

Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi held talks with Abdulla Ateya Al Messabi, Chief Executive Officer of ADNOC Drilling, focusing on potential strategic partnerships and the UAE company's participation in Egypt's upcoming drilling activity.

The discussions come as Egypt seeks to step up exploration, bring new discoveries into production more quickly and introduce advanced drilling technologies across its petroleum sector.

Drilling at the Centre of Egypt's Production Strategy

Egypt has placed increased drilling activity at the heart of its five-year plan for raising crude oil and natural gas output.

Badawi said the strategy involves increasing the pace of well drilling, accelerating development of proven discoveries and making wider use of modern technologies capable of improving operational efficiency and well productivity.

The government has been working to attract both international and regional energy companies as it looks to strengthen local production and reduce pressure created by the country's energy requirements.

Against that backdrop, cooperation with experienced regional drilling companies could play an important role in expanding activity across Egypt's producing areas and new exploration zones.

ADNOC Drilling Shows Interest in Egyptian Market

During the meeting, Al Messabi expressed ADNOC Drilling's interest in increasing its presence in Egypt and developing partnerships with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and companies operating under its umbrella.

ADNOC Drilling has extensive experience in onshore and offshore drilling and integrated oilfield services. Its operations include drilling, well completion and specialised services supported by technology-driven solutions.

For Egypt, access to that operational expertise could support efforts to shorten well-development timelines and improve production performance as drilling activity expands.

Badawi highlighted the company's technical capabilities and experience, noting the potential value of applying advanced drilling solutions to Egypt's oil and gas development plans.

Cooperation With Egyptian Drilling Company Discussed

The talks also covered possible cooperation with the Egyptian Drilling Company (EDC).

Al Messabi pointed to EDC's long operating history and experience in drilling oil and gas wells both within Egypt and in overseas markets.

Partnerships involving local and regional drilling companies could allow Egypt to combine domestic operational knowledge with broader technical capabilities as it undertakes more ambitious exploration and development programmes.

The next stage is expected to involve specialised technical meetings between the relevant parties.

Those discussions will examine specific areas where ADNOC Drilling could participate and identify projects that fit Egypt's targeted drilling programme.

Egypt Steps Up Search for New Energy Resources

The meeting forms part of a wider effort by Egypt to attract greater investment into its upstream energy industry.

In recent months, the petroleum ministry has moved to expand exploration and development activity across several regions while encouraging companies to deploy technologies such as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing where commercially and geologically appropriate.

Egypt has also been working with major international energy companies to move natural gas discoveries towards production and strengthen supplies from both Mediterranean and land-based fields.

Increasing domestic output remains particularly important as the country seeks to balance rising energy demand with the need to limit dependence on imported fuel.

Energy Ties Between Egypt and UAE Deepen

Energy cooperation between Egypt and the UAE already extends across infrastructure, engineering, petroleum services and investment.

A broader role for ADNOC Drilling would add another dimension to that relationship, particularly in upstream oil and gas services.

For ADNOC Drilling, Egypt could also offer a significant regional growth opportunity. The company has been looking beyond its core UAE market as part of a broader strategy centred on regional expansion, integrated drilling services and technology-led growth.

No specific contracts or investment commitments were announced following the latest meeting.

However, the planned technical discussions are expected to determine where cooperation could move from preliminary talks to operational participation.

If the discussions progress, the partnership could support Egypt's efforts to drill more wells, develop discoveries faster and bring additional oil and natural gas volumes to market while giving ADNOC Drilling a stronger foothold in one of North Africa's largest energy markets.
