DeepSeek Buzz Sends Nvidia and Other AI Stocks into a Tailspin

The growing hype around China’s DeepSeek, an AI startup offering a cost-effective alternative to high-end AI models, has caused a sharp drop in global AI-related stocks. Nvidia Corp and ASML Holding NV saw significant losses as DeepSeek’s latest AI assistant gained recognition for its innovative approach.

DeepSeek’s Disruptive Model
DeepSeek’s V3 model, the engine behind its popular AI assistant, has surpassed ChatGPT to become the top-rated free app on Apple’s App Store in the United States. Unlike traditional AI models that rely on resource-heavy hardware, DeepSeek has achieved similar performance at a fraction of the cost.

According to a recent paper by DeepSeek researchers, the V3 model was trained using Nvidia’s H800 chips, costing less than $6 million—a stark contrast to the higher expenses typically associated with training AI systems.

Market Reaction
The buzz around DeepSeek led to steep declines in the stocks of key AI players:

  • Nvidia Corp’s shares fell 11.54% on NASDAQ, closing at $126.16.
  • ASML Holding NV experienced an 11.7% drop on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, closing at €618.5.

These declines reflect growing concerns that DeepSeek’s low-cost, high-performance AI could disrupt the dominance of established US tech companies in the AI supply chain.

AI in a Geopolitical Context
DeepSeek’s rise comes despite US export restrictions aimed at curbing China’s access to advanced semiconductors. By developing models that require fewer resources, DeepSeek has circumvented these barriers, positioning itself as a formidable competitor in the global AI market.

Founded in 2023 in Hangzhou, DeepSeek has gained prominence for its focus on cost efficiency and innovation. Its rapid ascent could force US companies like Nvidia and OpenAI to reconsider their pricing strategies and development models.

The Future of AI
DeepSeek’s disruptive approach signals a broader shift in the AI industry, where affordability and resource optimization may become key factors in shaping the market. As the competition intensifies, the global AI landscape could witness significant changes in the coming years.
