Days after a fire broke out in a residential building near Dubai's Mall of the Emirates on December 30, tenants are still struggling to find new accommodations. Although some residents were allowed brief access to retrieve essential belongings, the building remains closed, forcing many to spend New Year’s Eve searching for shelter.

Christian Acosta, a Filipino chef who lived on the fourth floor, recounted his ordeal. “I spent New Year’s Eve looking for a place to stay. We still don’t know anything. At least we were allowed to retrieve our belongings.” After days of searching, he secured accommodation but admitted it was beyond his budget.

Another tenant, Algerian resident Ansam Mahmoud, has been staying with a friend while seeking rental options. “I managed to retrieve half of my belongings but left the rest because I had nowhere to store them. Hopefully, I can get them when the building reopens,” she said. For Ansam, the fire disrupted her plans, leaving her to spend New Year’s Eve recovering items instead of celebrating with friends.

Businesses Impacted

The fire also affected businesses in the building, including an Arabian restaurant on the ground floor. An employee described the chaos on the night of the fire, which occurred during one of their busiest nights. “We were serving food when we heard screams and saw people rushing to exit. We ensured our customers were safe and evacuated,” he said. The restaurant remains closed, and the team has yet to assess the damage as authorities continue their investigation.

Ongoing Investigation

Dubai Civil Defence is still investigating the cause of the fire. Retail shops in the building remain shut, and the area is cordoned off to ensure public safety. Emergency vehicles were visible at the scene on January 2, with only one lane open for traffic on the two-lane street.

As tenants and businesses await updates, the community remains hopeful for a resolution that will allow them to rebuild their lives and return to normalcy. Attempts to contact the building management have so far gone unanswered.
