A revolutionary mode of transport is set to take off in the UAE, promising high-speed travel over water at costs lower than a taxi ride. The Seaglider, an all-electric, wing-in-ground-effect craft, is expected to transform intercity commuting in the region by next year.
Introducing the Seaglider
The Seaglider, developed by Regent Craft, combines the speed of an aircraft with the accessibility and operating costs of a boat. Operating dock-to-dock over water within a wingspan of the surface, it is poised to become a key addition to the UAE’s futuristic transport infrastructure.
Billy Thalheimer, founder and CEO of Regent Craft, announced at the World Governments Summit in Dubai that testing is progressing well. “The prototype will be on the water very soon, and we expect to test it in the air this summer. The product vehicle will be delivered in late 2026 or early 2027,” he stated.
High-Speed, Low-Cost Travel
One of the most promising aspects of the Seaglider is its affordability. Passengers can travel between Abu Dhabi Marina and Dubai Marina in a 12-seater Seaglider for just $45 (Dh165), a fraction of the cost of a helicopter ride.
The craft can cover distances up to 180 miles (300 km) using existing battery technology. Future advancements could extend its range to 500 miles (800 km), allowing wider connectivity.
How the Seaglider Works
Seagliders operate in three distinct modes:
-
Float Mode – The craft maneuvers at docks using its hull, allowing passengers and goods to board and disembark with ease.
-
Foil Mode – Hydrofoils lift the hull out of the water, reducing drag and enhancing efficiency.
-
Fly Mode – Using the "ground effect" phenomenon, the craft glides just above the water’s surface at speeds of up to 180 mph (300 km/h).
Investment and UAE Involvement
Regent Craft has secured over $90 million in funding from investors, including Lockheed Martin, Japan Airlines, and Saudi Arabia’s NEOM. The company also boasts a global order book worth over $9 billion across six continents.
In April 2024, the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and Regent signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support Seaglider development in the UAE. The project will be integrated into the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) cluster in Masdar City.
Thalheimer emphasized the UAE’s crucial role in manufacturing, workforce development, and global expansion. “Plans are maturing, and we have some big announcements coming soon,” he teased.
Looking Ahead
With ongoing advancements and strong local support, the Seaglider is set to revolutionize water-based transportation in the UAE. The nation continues to embrace innovation, reinforcing its position as a leader in smart mobility solutions.
