A growing number of UAE residents are turning to cosmetic procedures in search of perfection, a trend that experts say is heavily influenced by social media. However, many individuals fall into the trap of overcorrection, gradually losing their natural features in pursuit of an ever-changing beauty standard.
Harriet Middleton, Head of Beauty at DNA Health and Wellness, emphasized that societal expectations, media portrayal, and personal insecurities often drive people toward continuous cosmetic enhancements.
"The pursuit of perfection is often shaped by external influences. Some individuals may keep seeking procedures to match an unattainable ideal," she said.
Growing Cosmetic Surgery Market in the UAE
The cosmetic industry in the UAE is witnessing rapid growth. Reports indicate that in 2024, the country contributed 0.5% of the global cosmetic surgery market revenue. By 2030, the UAE’s cosmetic surgery and procedure market is projected to reach Dh2.1 billion, growing at an estimated 10.5% annually.
According to Dr. Niro Sivathasan, an expert in aesthetic medicine, the first cosmetic procedure often leads to more.
"Many start with something small, like lip fillers. Before they realize it, they seek more treatments—sometimes for features that are already well-proportioned," he said.
Dr. Niro noted that self-esteem plays a major role in these choices. He recalled a case study where a patient, believing her cheeks needed correction, was actually bothered by her nose profile due to childhood remarks from her mother.
"She carried that insecurity for decades. Two previous doctors performed unnecessary procedures on her without addressing the root issue," he explained, emphasizing the need for responsible consultation.
Trends in Cosmetic Procedures
With technological advancements, the cosmetic industry is seeing a shift towards non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments.
"Weight loss injections are gaining popularity, but rapid weight loss often causes sagging skin. This has increased demand for skin-tightening procedures," Middleton said.
Other trending treatments include:
- Radiofrequency microneedling – Boosts collagen production to improve skin texture.
- Peptide therapy – Rejuvenates skin at a cellular level.
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy – Stimulates natural healing and skin renewal.
- IV nutrient infusions – Used for skin hydration and anti-aging benefits.
- Ultrasound-based fat reduction – A non-invasive alternative for body contouring.
Dr. Niro added that minimally invasive procedures are becoming more popular because they are safer, less expensive, and require minimal recovery time.
"People want quick treatments that allow them to return to their daily routine without long recovery periods," he said.
Responsible Cosmetic Practices
Experts stress that patients should focus on enhancements that complement their natural features rather than chasing unrealistic beauty standards.
"Education and clear communication about achievable results are key to preventing excessive dependence on cosmetic procedures," Middleton stated.
AI-based skin assessment tools are now being used to evaluate skin conditions in detail, helping professionals deliver personalized treatments while tracking patient progress with greater accuracy.
With the cosmetic industry expanding rapidly, specialists are urging individuals to prioritize informed decisions and seek ethical practitioners who guide them towards realistic and safe enhancements.
