Dubai : As Muslims across the UAE observe Ramadan, workplace productivity becomes a key concern for professionals who fast from dawn to sunset. While fasting can initially cause fatigue and reduced focus, experts say that with proper adaptation and strategic planning, employees can maintain efficiency and even experience enhanced mental clarity and discipline.

How Fasting Affects Productivity

Fasting can impact energy levels, cognitive function, and emotional regulation, especially in the first few days, due to lower blood glucose levels. However, according to Dr. Hala Abdulkareem, Consultant Family Medicine at Burjeel Medical City, Abu Dhabi, most individuals adapt over time, and some even report improved concentration and mental sharpness.

“Fasting can temporarily reduce working memory and attention span, but after a few days, many people develop sharper focus, better discipline, and improved clarity,” she explained.

Studies also indicate that while energy dips in the afternoonmorning productivity remains strong, making it crucial for professionals to prioritize demanding tasks earlier in the day.

Tips to Stay Productive While Fasting

1. Prioritize Complex Tasks in the Morning

  • The morning hours are when energy levels are at their peak, making it the best time for important meetings, critical thinking, and complex problem-solving.

  • Avoid mentally demanding tasks during late afternoons, when fatigue may set in.

2. Strategic Breaks to Maintain Focus

  • Short, intentional breaks throughout the day can help prevent burnout.

  • Light movement, deep breathing exercises, and stretching can improve concentration.

3. Optimize Nutrition for Sustained Energy

  • At suhoor (pre-dawn meal), opt for slow-digesting foods like oats, protein-rich items, and fiber-filled fruits to sustain energy levels throughout the day.

  • Stay hydrated during non-fasting hours by drinking plenty of water and avoiding caffeinated drinks, which can lead to dehydration.

4. Improve Sleep Quality

  • Adjust sleeping schedules to ensure at least 6–8 hours of rest despite altered meal timings.

  • Power naps during the day can help recharge energy levels and boost alertness.

Employer Support: Flexibility is Key

Dr. Raga Sandhya Gandi, Specialist Psychiatry at Zulekha Hospital Dubai, emphasized the importance of flexible working conditions during Ramadan.

“Employers can support fasting employees by offering flexible hours, remote work options, and access to stress management resources,” she suggested.

Encouraging a shift from a time-based to an outcome-based approach can help professionals manage tasks efficiently while maintaining their well-being.

Ramadan as an Opportunity for Growth

Beyond workplace adjustments, Ramadan also serves as a period of self-discipline and mental resilienceDr. Saima Khan, Specialist Family Medicine at Prime Medical Centre, Jumeirah, emphasized viewing fasting as an opportunity to strengthen focus and mindfulness.

"Ramadan teaches self-discipline, and leveraging this mindset in the workplace can enhance overall efficiency," she said.

With proper planning, nutrition, and employer support, professionals in the UAE can successfully balance their work commitments while observing the spiritual and physical practices of Ramadan.
