Palestinian expatriates in the UAE have strongly condemned US President Donald Trump's recent statement proposing a US-led takeover of the Gaza Strip. Trump suggested that the United States would economically develop Gaza after Palestinians are resettled elsewhere, a proposal that many Palestinians view as a blatant disregard for their history and rights.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump referred to Gaza as a "demolition site" and raised the idea of relocating more than two million Palestinians to neighboring countries like Egypt and Jordan. He framed the redevelopment of Gaza as an opportunity to create "thousands and thousands of jobs" and transform the area into a global landmark, claiming it could become "the Riviera of the Middle East."
The proposal quickly sparked outrage among Palestinian expats, who argue that it treats their land like a real estate project and seeks to erase their identity. Salma, a media practitioner from Dubai, expressed her disbelief, noting that Trump's past comments about Gaza’s "waterfront property" being "valuable" suggested an exploitative mindset.
"We cannot allow him to erase our history," said Ahmed, a 34-year-old engineer. "This is an affront to our dignity, our homeland, and our right to return." Others, like Lina, a 29-year-old teacher, warned that the proposal would only exacerbate the suffering of Palestinians and destabilize the region further.
Many Palestinians in the UAE see the plan as a continuation of the displacement they have endured since the 1948 Nakba (catastrophe) and consider it a violation of international law. "It’s like another Nakba," said Anwar Awni Sunallah, a former Gaza resident now living in Dubai. "This proposal could push us into even deeper exile."
Palestinian expatriates emphasized that Gaza is not just a piece of land—it is central to their identity and history. "Palestine is our land, and we belong there," said Omar, a 45-year-old shop owner from Gaza. His statement echoes the widespread belief that the rights of the Palestinian people cannot be bargained away for political or economic gain.
The condemnation of Trump's proposal reflects the deep emotional and political stakes tied to Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Palestinian communities in the UAE are calling for a comprehensive solution that respects their rights, history, and future in their homeland.
