Shenzhen — Apple supplier Luxshare Precision shares rose 10% on Monday after rumors broke that the company is collaborating with OpenAI to create a consumer device based on large language models.
The Information said that Luxshare is already making prototypes for OpenAI, including one that looks like a smart speaker without a screen. Such a device would put OpenAI head-to-head against Apple's Siri-enabled products, with the release said to be on track to occur around late 2026 or early 2027.
Luxshare's steep surge takes its year-to-date rise to over 50%. The company, which produces items like AirPods and Vision Pro, is also pondering a secondary listing in Hong Kong later this year.
The move underscores OpenAI’s broader push into hardware. The AI firm has been recruiting former Apple talent, including Tang Tan, and previously partnered with ex-Apple designer Jony Ive through a $6.4 billion acquisition of his startup, io Products. The company has also approached other Apple suppliers, including Goertek, for components.
Neither Luxshare nor OpenAI has publicly commented on the reported deal.
