In a significant step toward boosting local healthcare capabilities, petrochemicals giant Borouge has signed a strategic agreement with Mubadala Bio to support the production of UAE-made medical-grade materials. The partnership was formalized during the “Make it in the Emirates” forum and aligns with the country’s broader industrialization push under the Operation 300 Billion strategy.
The new collaboration aims to enhance the UAE’s self-reliance in critical healthcare products by reducing dependency on imported materials. Borouge will begin supplying Mubadala Bio with polyolefins specifically engineered for medical applications, starting with Bormed™ RG868MO—marking the first time such a material has been produced locally. Manufactured at Borouge’s Al Ruwais facility, Bormed™ meets stringent sterilization and mechanical standards required for use in syringes, inhalers, and pharmaceutical packaging.
“This partnership demonstrates our commitment to innovation and supporting a resilient healthcare supply chain within the UAE,” said executives from both firms during the announcement. The agreement is seen as a vital enabler of sustainable healthcare manufacturing and pharmaceutical packaging production.
Launched earlier this week, Mubadala Bio is a new healthcare platform integrating biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical logistics under a single umbrella. The company plans to supply medical products to over 100 countries through a global network of 10 facilities, including six in the UAE. With an annual production capacity of 2.5 billion tablets and 120 million injectables, Mubadala Bio is positioned to play a pivotal role in advancing the nation’s healthcare infrastructure and drug security.
The collaboration also aligns with the UAE’s national agenda to accelerate industrial growth through homegrown innovation and high-value manufacturing. It is expected to generate long-term economic benefits while ensuring consistent access to essential treatments and medical devices.
By leveraging Borouge’s material science expertise and Mubadala Bio’s expanding production capacity, the partnership is set to place the UAE on the global map as a reliable source for high-quality healthcare products.
