Out-of-form all-rounder Mitch Marsh has been dropped from Australia’s playing XI for the crucial fifth Test against India in Sydney. Beau Webster, a seasoned performer in Sheffield Shield cricket, is set to debut in a match that could see Australia reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2014-15.

“Mitchy hasn’t quite got the runs or wickets he wanted this series,” said Australian captain Pat Cummins, adding, “It’s a shame for Mitchy because we know what he brings to the team, but now feels like the right time for Beau to get his chance.”

Marsh’s struggles with both bat and ball during the series have raised doubts about his Test future. The 33-year-old, who made his debut in 2014, returned to the squad as a replacement for Cameron Green but failed to make an impact. Despite his axing, Cummins emphasized that Marsh remains a vital part of Australia’s white-ball plans.

Beau Webster, a 31-year-old Tasmanian, brings versatility to the side with his ability to bowl both pace and off-spin, providing a backup option should left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc face fitness issues. Starc, despite a rib injury, has been cleared to play after bowling 41 overs in Melbourne, where Australia secured a commanding 184-run victory.

Teenage opener Sam Konstas, who impressed with a 60-run knock in Melbourne, retains his place, completing a lineup that highlights Australia’s blend of youth and experience.

Victory or a draw in Sydney will not only secure the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but also guarantee Australia a spot in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s against South Africa.

Australia’s Playing XI: Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland
