Abu Dhabi – With Ramadan fast approaching, UAE residents are gearing up for the holy month by purchasing groceries, household essentials, and festive decorations in bulk. Taking advantage of special pre-Ramadan discounts at hypermarkets, supermarkets, and online stores, shoppers are saving significantly while ensuring they are well-prepared for the season.
Strategic Buying Reduces Waste and Enhances Convenience
Many expatriates are prioritizing smart shopping strategies to minimize food waste and maximize convenience. By stocking up on versatile ingredients, families can prepare a variety of meals without frequent grocery trips.
“Buying in bulk allows me to save money and time while ensuring we have all the essentials for iftar and suhoor,” said Zoya Shaikh, an Abu Dhabi resident. To accommodate her bulk purchases, she recently bought a four-door French refrigerator for AED 3,000, providing additional freezer space for pre-prepared meals like Shami kebabs, Russian cutlets, and samosas.
“I like to plan ahead so that I can focus on spirituality and family time during Ramadan,” Zoya added. Meal prepping, such as making homemade tomato purée, pre-cutting vegetables, and freezing meats, helps her save both energy and expenses.
Online Deals, Cashback Offers, and Budget-Friendly Shopping
In addition to in-store promotions, many residents are leveraging online sales, cashback offers, and discount coupons to stretch their budgets further.
“Ramadan preparations are in full swing, and bulk discounts are helping us stock up without overspending,” said Shukri Deria, an American expatriate. “We make sure to buy non-perishable staples like rice, flour, and lentils early to avoid last-minute price hikes.”
Shukri also highlighted online Ramadan sales, noting that retailers have started offering discounts on festive decorations, table settings, and lighting accessories.
Decorating on a Budget: DIY and Smart Savings
For many families, home decorations play a significant role in creating a festive atmosphere. However, these expenses can add up quickly.
“We love decorating our home with crescent moons, lanterns, and twinkling lights,” said Zain Osama, a Jordanian expat. “But rather than overspending, we look for discounted deals, reuse decorations from previous years, and even make DIY crafts to keep costs low.”
Zain emphasized that while home decor can be budget-friendly, gifts and clothing tend to be more expensive. To offset costs, many families take advantage of seasonal promotions and discount vouchers available through e-commerce platforms and local retailers.
Mindful Shopping: Avoiding Impulse Buys
While discounts are appealing, some residents caution against overbuying.
“Shopping while fasting can lead to impulse purchases,” noted Nadia Saleem, a Pakistani resident. “Bulk buying feels like a smart decision, but if not planned properly, it can result in excess food that goes unused.”
Nadia, like many others, prefers a minimalist approach—focusing on essentials such as dates, beverages, and pantry staples, rather than purchasing in excess.
As Ramadan draws closer, UAE residents are proving that smart planning and mindful spending can make the holy month both affordable and meaningful.
